Dowds were appointed as M&E contractors on the £10m project, which involved the construction of a new-build facility on a restricted site. Dowds remit included the design and installation of all M&E services to the 3150m2 teaching space, which caters for 300 trainees and is complete with Industry Standard Recording Studios and State-of-the-Art Editing suites.
The main challenge for Dowds was how compact the site space was and location, deliveries had to be pre-planned as access was limited and restricted time slots.
Due to the shape and design of the building not being a typical standard shape, internally a lot of the walls were curved and with exposed slabs this, meant our installations had to be right first time. A lot of the rooms were also full height spaces, which proved to be challenging for us to coordinate the M&E services at first but equally was important being able to install with limited fixing points.
One of the most exciting and achievable parts of ELAM was the auditorium, we worked very close with the clients specialist contractors “Stage Electrics”, as coordination was critical.
